Power Projects under CPEC - A GIS Perspective

China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a regional connectivity framework that not only links Pakistan and China but also provides benefit to Iran, Afghanistan, India, Central Asian Republic, and the region. This development includes improved road network, rail network, air transport and many improvements in other sectors as well to enhance trade and businesses and to connect people to each other. This development also provides opportunities to understand each other cultural, regional knowledge and activities for harmony. In other words, this connectivity is a step towards economic regionalization for development, peace, and growth of the economy.  The CPEC projects include following development programs:
 Integrated development of potential areas under CPEC for Regional Connectivity;
    • Transport framework
    • Energy Hubs
    • Energy cooperation
    • Trade & business Hubs
    • Peace & development
    • Logistic Hubs
    • Agricultural Cooperation
    • Agricultural development & poverty alleviation
    • Enhance Security and stability of the region
        Human Resource Development
    • People to people Connectivity and Harmonization
    • Tourism enhancement
    • Cooperation in subsistence areas
    • Increase in development opportunities
    • Educational linkage
    • Health Care
       Industrial Development
·         Spatial layout designing
·         Functional zones identification
·         Industries and industrial parks identification
·         Industrial cooperation
    Financial Cooperation
·         Diverse Investment opportunities

The provided trade corridor under CPEC begins from Xinjiang (province of China) and ends at Gawader port in Baluchistan (province of Pakistan). The CPEC project consists of many small and large scale infrastructural subprojects that are under construction in Pakistan. The total worth of this project is 62 Million$ whereas in start its worth was 46 Million$ only. Afghanistan is now an official part of CPEC which evidently depicts the connectivity within the region. CPEC project will not only profitable for Pakistan and China, it also put a positive effect on all the surrounding countries.
In this blog, I would like to discuss all energy projects and their capacity for generating electricity in Pakistan which are under construction or completed under CPEC project. Starting from current power plants, there are total 81 power plants in Pakistan. The installed capacity of power plants is 24857MW and they are producing 95730GWh of electricity only. Table 1 shows the power plant type and its installed and generation capacity.

Table 1: Installed and Generation Capacity in 2015
The distribution of 81 power plants is such as, in Punjab 35 power plants, in Sindh 22, in Baluchistan 7, in KP 13 and in Azad Jammu Kashmir 3 power plants exist. Figure 1 shows the distribution of power plant province wise.

In Pakistan transmission and distribution lines network consists of 500 kV, 220 kV, 132 kV, or 66 kV of electricity lines. The 500 kV transmission line is termed as the primary transmission line that connects north and south. Whereas other transmission lines such as 220 kV, 132 kV, and 66 kV are termed as the secondary transmission lines which are connected to primary transmission lines. Table 2 shows the province wise length of transmission line. Figure 2 shows the graphical representation of transmission lines.

The sub-projects to be installed under CPEC project are such as solar, wind, thermal, hydro and coal power plants. There are eighteen sub-projects that will be installed all over Pakistan. The detail of sub-projects under CPEC is shown in Table 3
